Target Transition in Sport Shooting

Target transition is a fundamental skill in shooting, involving the shooter switching from the target of the last shot to the next target and pulling the trigger. The statement, "Matches are won not just with rapid double taps, but through target transitions and fluidity," also refers to the basic principles that ensure success in shooting. To be a good shooter, it is important to move fluidly and transition between triggers effectively.
Many shooters feel that target transitions are not easy. Beginners and intermediate shooters may often take too much time during target transitions. The main reasons for this are:
  • Trying to verify the target was hit after shooting.
  • Starting the target transition after waiting for the firearm to fire.
  • Moving the firearm together with the eyes.
  • Moving with too much tension in the body, especially around the shoulders.
  • Acting aggressively, missing the center of the target, and trying to return to it.

Using the upper body instead of a combination of legs and knees for target transitions is also a common mistake. Making these mistakes may have adverse effects on achieving the desired fluidity in matches. Therefore, specific tactics and strategies should be used to be more fluid and effective during target transitions. Implementing these tactics can enhance a shooter's performance and provide a better and more fluid shooting experience.
Another point to consider in target transitions is making sure one does not waste time checking the target after shooting. Trying to check the target can lead to time loss and the flow of the stage disruption, resulting in point losses. Therefore, after shooting, the shooter should think that they hit the center mass and stop looking at the hit targets, instead of focusing on the target that was just shot. This approach can help the shooter perform target transitions more effectively.

Time Advantage in Target Transitions
One of the techniques I consider and use as a cornerstone of fast target transitions involves directing the gun toward the target at the new target the moment the trigger is pulled. This technique is based on transitioning to another target before the firearm fully recoils. The technique uses the nerve transmission time during the shooting process; this includes firing time, the time it takes to leave the barrel, and lock time, thus providing a time advantage in target transitions.
Another important point in target transitions is to place the eye directly in the center of the next target while the trigger is being pulled. This ensures the shooter focuses on the target and achieves accurate shots. Then, it is necessary to position the gun’s sights or optics between the eye and the target. Repeating this step for each target transition and maintaining the sequence of eye-barrel-trigger is crucial, and performing this sequence ensures consistency with each shot and helps the shooter aim more accurately at the targets. Thus, the shooter maintains a consistent aiming process with each target transition.
Incorrect practices such as moving too aggressively, not relaxing the shoulder pivot points, and trying to hold the gun too tightly can also lead to alignment errors and time losses in transitions between targets. Therefore, care should be taken to maintain a relaxed posture during matches or regular shooting. The gun can be tightly gripped with the help of the hand and wrist, but the arm and shoulder areas should be kept relaxed.

Active Use of Lower Limbs
Trying to perform target transitions by just moving the upper body can negatively affect the fluidity of the transition. It is important to actively use lower limbs in all target transitions because making large movements close to the gun increases the risk of losing sight picture over the target.
In target transitions, factors such as trigger control, eye transition, waiting time on the target, and not creating tension in the muscles are important. Regular training to develop these skills can bring a shooter to the desired level of fluidity.
We invite you to CANiK ACADEMY training to gain new skills for sports shooting and advance these skills to the next level.
Stay safe, stay tuned!
