“The CANiK TTI Combat demonstrates that CANiK is now competing in the high-end pistol segment and that we are a key player in this space.”
Introduced as the next step in the evolution of CANiK’s firearms family, the CANiK TTI Combat made a grand debut on the world stage in January at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas. Developed in collaboration between CANiK and Taran Butler, founder of Taran Tactical Innovations (TTI) and a shooting trainer for Hollywood celebrities, the CANiK TTI Combat has become CANiK’s hottest product since its launch. Cahit Utku Aral, General Manager of CANiK, shared insights into the development process and design details of the firearm, which reached users after a 14-month R&D and product development phase, in an interview with CANiK News.
CANiK News: How did CANiK decide to develop a pistol in collaboration with Taran Butler, Founder of Taran Tactical Innovations (TTI) and a shooting trainer for Hollywood celebrities?
Cahit Utku ARAL: Since 2015, CANiK has been targeting the high-end market with our firearm designs and the new products we develop. Our first weapon to cater to this segment was the SFx Rival. In 2017, we collaborated with one of the most renowned custom firearm developers of that time, Salient Arms International (SAI), to create the CANiK TP9 Elite Combat. This was the first time CANiK partnered with a specialist company in the custom firearm sector to develop a pistol. The CANiK TP9 Elite Combat was widely praised and accepted globally, earning numerous accolades, including several “Handgun of the Year” awards. It also became our best-selling pistol in the years that followed. We decided it was time to develop a new pistol to succeed the CANiK TP9 Elite Combat sometime in 2022. We believed that collaborating with another custom firearm manufacturer would be the right approach. After thorough research, we chose to work with Taran Butler, a champion shooter with a remarkable track record during his competitive years. This decision led to the collaboration between CANiK and Taran Tactical Innovations (TTI), founded by Butler.
CANiK News: How did both parties contribute to the collaboration between CANiK and TTI?
Cahit Utku ARAL: The CANiK TTI Combat was designed by the CANiK team, taking into account TTI’s other firearms. We produced multiple prototypes and sent them to the United States. The prototypes were tested by both Taran Butler and our shooters. We made numerous revisions based on the feedback we received. We focused on details such as the sights, patterns on the frame, serrations, shading on the serrations, and the shapes on the slide, and worked on different designs. Every feature on the firearm was carefully considered and crafted with meticulous attention to detail. For instance, the shading on the serrations was intentionally added to give the gun a worn and used look. After getting approval from both our team and Taran Butler, we launched the CANiK TTI Combat on the world stage.
A Product of a 25-Person Team
CANiK News: Could you tell us about the development process of the CANiK TTI Combat? When did you start working on it, and how many people were involved in the development of the product?
Cahit Utku ARAL: The design work for the CANiK TTI Combat took 14 months. We decided to start this project at the beginning of 2022 and launched it at the SHOT Show in early 2024. As you know, these kinds of projects can take a long time. We worked with an experienced team on both the R&D and product development sides, a team that knew exactly what we wanted. CANiK supported the project with 20 people. On the CANiK USA side, we had two people involved-one in business development and the other in product management. On the TTI Combat side, three people were involved. So, we worked with a total team of 25 people. One point I’d like to highlight is that we didn’t just focus on product development for the CANiK TTI Combat. We meticulously prepared every detail, from the presentation of the product to its packaging, including the contents of the box and even the medal inside the box.
CANiK News: This work was carried out in both Türkiye and the United States. How did you manage to collaborate so closely between two countries that are separated by an ocean and more?
Cahit Utku ARAL: The most critical aspect of the CANiK TTI Combat was the design. The design was done by CANiK in Türkiye, with approval from Taran Butler. This was crucial because if the designs had been made in the United States, the product’s registration would have remained in the U.S. Therefore, the product was designed in line with TTI’s style but by the CANiK team. We had gained significant experience in similar projects from our previous collaboration with SAI, so we didn’t have any difficulties managing the process. We didn’t encounter any unforeseen situations. The project was entirely under CANiK’s control and was carried out with this in mind.
All Ammunition Types Were Tested
CANiK News: What was the process like for the qualification phase of the CANiK TTI Combat?
Cahit Utku ARAL: We used an entirely new recoil spring and firing pin configuration for the CANiK TTI Combat. This spring configuration was chosen to deliver optimal performance with different types of ammunition. Accordingly, the box includes a recoil spring designed for low-pressure ammunition, in addition to the compensator integrated into the barrel at the muzzle of the firearm. Additionally, the box contains other accessories tailored to the shooter’s preferences or expertise. As with all our firearms, we tested the CANiK TTI Combat with all existing low- and high-grain ammunition types available worldwide.
Over 20,000 Units Sold in 2 Days
CANiK News: The CANiK TTI Combat was launched in January at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas. Was there a particular reason for choosing this event for the launch?
Cahit Utku ARAL: The SHOT Show is the most important trade show in the world for firearms and shooting sports. It’s where our entire customer portfolio, including institutions, organizations, and end-users, comes together. All our distributors also attend this event to see our latest products. As such, it was the most appropriate choice for us. In fact, we had already presented the CANiK TTI Combat to our distributors and received orders before the show. Our goal was to ensure that end-users could find the pistol in stores immediately after the launch. As soon as the product was introduced in the U.S., we set a record by selling over 20,000 CANiK TTI Combat handguns within two days. It was an incredibly successful launch. We had a dedicated stage where Taran Butler gave daily presentations, explaining the gun’s features and unique aspects to the visitors at the show. We also broadcast these sessions live through our social media channels, reaching a broader audience.
CANiK News: What kind of feedback have you received from individual customers and industry professionals regarding the CANiK TTI Combat?
Cahit Utku ARAL: The CANiK TTI Combat was designed specifically for sports shooting. As a result, professional shooters appreciated that the firearm was tailored for ammunition made for sports shooting, along with enjoying the compensator that reduces muzzle rise. Since its launch, the CANiK TTI Combat has become our hottest product. In fact, we have already received orders through the end of the year. Therefore, we can confidently say that we have successfully managed this project. Until now, it has been challenging to access TTI's designs in Europe and Africa. By integrating a TTI design with the CANiK brand and making it accessible in markets outside the United States, we have reached a broader audience. The TTI-CANiK collaboration has made this type of firearm more accessible in these regions. This product has become a significant sales channel for us in the global market. The CANiK TTI Combat is one of the most expensive firearms we have ever released. This demonstrates that CANiK is now competing in the high-end product segment and that we are a key player in this space. Today, we are already one of the five largest companies in the world within our field.
A Brand-New Compensator Design
CANiK News: Has the development process of the CANiK TTI Combat brought any new capabilities to CANiK as a whole? Were there any production techniques or designs applied for the first time with this product?
Cahit Utku ARAL: We designed a compensator that mounts on top of the barrel for the first time for the CANiK TTI Combat and obtained a patent for it. The biggest disadvantage of compensators is fouling. To address this, we designed a compensator that can be easily attached to and detached from the barrel, allowing users to clean it with ease. This was our first integrated compensator project. As a result, we reduced both muzzle rise and recoil by 25 percent. This was a significant achievement for us. Now, we plan to test this mounting and detachment system on our suppressors and work on integrating suppressors with barrels. All the innovations we implemented for this firearm have provided substantial overall benefits to our R&D efforts.
CANiK TTI Combat Will Be on the Silver Screen for a Long Time
CANiK News: What were CANiK's goals in collaborating with TTI? To what extent have you achieved these goals so far? For example, have there been any developments regarding the CANiK TTI Combat being the firearm of choice for actors in Hollywood’s leading films?
Cahit Utku ARAL: We have already achieved significant success with the CANiK TTI Combat. This year and next year, the CANiK TTI Combat will appear in many Hollywood films and TV series. This will certainly make a substantial contribution to our brand value. Collaborating with CANiK has also been a significant gain for TTI. The CANiK TTI Combat has become one of the biggest projects that Taran Butler and the TTI team have undertaken so far. I can confidently say that we will see the CANiK TTI Combat on the silver screen for a long time.
CANiK News: How has this collaboration impacted the brand awareness and value of Samsun Yurt Savunma (SYS) and CANiK?
Cahit Utku ARAL: The collaboration has made a significant contribution to our brand awareness. Taran Butler is a shooter and designer who appeals to the high-segment product group that we target. We have sent an important message to our target audience with CANiK TTI Combat, in line with where we have positioned CANiK since 2015. We have now caught the attention of customers who were not aware of us and what we can do.
"Keep Watching Us"
CANiK News: Are you working on new projects or products that would continue this collaboration? Do you plan to pursue other partnerships with TTI in the future?
Cahit Utku ARAL: CANiK is a company that always has new projects. Development at CANiK never stops. We have many products that we are preparing to launch this year and in 2025. These include products in different calibers, various systems, and solutions, as well as accessories. We are as proactive as possible in new product development and make our plans well in advance. So, keep watching us.
We would like to thank Cahit Utku Aral, General Manager of CANiK, for taking the time to answer our questions and for providing us with such valuable information.
