The Rise of 30x113mm Low Recoil Autocannons

The 30x113mm low recoil automatic cannons were among the leading concepts showcased at DSEI 23, an exceptional exhibition held between 12-15 September in London, bringing the defense industry, armed forces, and the academic world together. It was not surprising to see them in that position, as these guns have been used in the last 5 years, mainly as part of the low-altitude air defense system against helicopters, Category 1 and 2 drones, and loitering munitions (C-UAS), which will protect the tactical units of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps in the battlefields of today and future. These cannons were chosen to be the primary armament for M-SHORAD Stryker 8x8 and MADIS JLTV 4x4 vehicles in this role. In addition, as DSEI was showcasing these weapons, news started to spread that these armaments were also destined for Ukraine, where their effectiveness would be tested in their C-UAS and infantry support roles.

With this in mind, it is not surprising to see that under one of the security assistance packages sent by the United States to Ukraine, the 30x113mm cannon and remote-controlled weapon system (RCWS) called 'Slinger', will be integrated into the heavy 4x4 pickup (Chevrolet Denali), which will make the pick-up a ‘gun truck’ to be used as the last line of defense behind the front lines, against the anticipated Russian attacks on the energy infrastructure this winter. Furthermore, 160 such cannons will be integrated into M113 and 4x4 Bushmaster APCs donated to the Ukrainian Armed Forces and Ukrainian-made 4x4 Kozak MRAPs and LTVs.

Considering this trend, the fact that various companies at DSEI were offering the 30x113mm low recoil gun-based armament options as infantry support and C-UAS weapons, especially for integration into 8x8, 6x6, and 4x4 armored vehicles should not surprise anybody either.

As newly-developed ammunition gets more widespread, their qualification processes either conclude or get close, and their performance in difficult combat conditions to liberate Ukraine from the Russian occupation, it is clear that these weapons will prove themselves as an ideal solution on battlefields for armored vehicles & UGV in certain roles to meet the needs of high-intensity/large-scale armed conflict, especially from the second half of 2024.

At this point, it is important to highlight that the Turkish defense industry and the Turkish Armed Forces have now the ability to play a leading role worldwide by developing or refining the concepts regarding the utilization of this weapon in future mechanized warfare, all thanks to the VENOM LR cannon and TRAKON RCWS offered by CANiK and UNIROBOTICS, and this compact and lightweight VENOM LR-TRAKON pair is ready to arm armored vehicles, combined with various secondary weapons, so that the vehicles are ready for every mission that they are expected to fulfill.
