Effective Firepower for Air, Land, and Sea Platforms: CANiK M3

CANiK initiated the development process for 12.7 mm heavy machine guns and successfully concluded the machine gun family with the introduction of CANiK M3. Capable of firing 1,100–1,200 rounds per minute, the CANiK M3 offers an efficient solution for air, naval, and land platforms alike. With the introduction of this latest model, CANiK has become the only brand globally to manufacture all versions of the 12.7 × 99 mm heavy machine guns.

CANiK, recognized as one of the world’s largest firearms producers, achieved significant success with the M2 QCB heavy machine gun, a project initiated in 2018. The machine gun is capable of firing 600–650 rounds per minute and gained critical acclaim within the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF). Building on this success, CANiK continued its efforts, launching the M2F, an enhanced heavy machine gun with a firing capacity of 900–950 rounds per minute. This version also proved successful, prompting CANiK to expand its product lineup.

CANiK Is the Sole Company Producing All Versions of 12.7 × 99 Heavy Machine Guns

Following approximately two years of development and qualification processes, the M3 emerged as the most advanced member of the family. The CANiK M3, with a firing rate of 1,100–1,200 rounds per minute, stands as an effective armament for air, land, and naval platforms. With the introduction of this latest model, CANiK has become the only brand globally capable of producing all versions of the 12.7 × 99 mm heavy machine guns. Cahit Utku Aral, General Manager of CANiK, shared the story behind the creation of CANiK M3:

High Firepower Combined with Long Effective Range

"In the past, the fast-firing version, M3, was primarily used in aircraft. As air platforms exhibit significantly higher speeds compared to others, a machine gun for such platforms requires a high rate of fire for air-to-ground or air-to-air engagements. The maneuverability and speed of aircraft necessitate saturating the target area with more projectiles, achievable only with a high-rate-of-fire gun like the M3. However, over the last decade, we observed that this high-rate-of-fire machine gun has started to be utilized on land and naval platforms as well. The U.S. Special Forces have adapted this gun to land vehicles through American manufacturers, owing to its high firepower and effective long-range capabilities. This development prompted us to create the M3."

Two Years of Development Process

Highlighting that the CANiK M3 is fundamentally different from the M2 QCB and M2F, Aral stated, "The transition from M2 QCB to M2F was relatively straightforward, and we completed it swiftly. However, the M3 is undoubtedly a completely different firearm. The effort we invested in the M3, encompassing R&D, quality, and industrialization, far exceeded that of the other family members. Deliberate and intensive work was required for the M3, and its development and qualification processes took nearly 2 years. We invested $2.5 million in the development and $2 million in the industrialization of this firearm, positioning us to deliver it to users."

First CANiK M3 to Be Delivered in 2024

Aral emphasized that the CANiK M3 was unveiled at IDEF 2023 and received a positive response from end-users, addressing a significant gap on the battlefield. He also noted that they secured pre-orders for various projects. Aral mentioned that the M3 would be incorporated into numerous weapon integration projects in friendly and allied countries, providing solutions to integrators. He stated, "Especially in Southeast Asia and South America, there are ready-to-go projects that have been awaiting the development of the M3 for a long time. Starting in 2024, we will commence deliveries as part of these projects. This situation will not only benefit CANiK but also create new opportunities for our other companies under the SYS umbrella."
