Tactical Shooting: El Presidente
El Presidente Drill: Shooting Practice Tool to improve speed, accuracy, multiple target transition and quick respond to threats.
El Presidente Drill: Shooting Practice Tool to improve speed, accuracy, multiple target transition and quick respond to threats.
Shooters are supposed to have different practical exercises to improve their physical skills related to speed and accuracy. Now that these exercises have systematic, regular, and measurable effects and affect performance directly, they have spread worldwide and are set as international standards.
One of the most well-known shooting practices, called “El Presidente Drill”, was developed by Colonel Jeff Cooper during the training conducted for South American presidential security.
The technique used in of El Presidente Drill, which improves both tactical and sport shooting skills, is as follows [1]:
• Located three half-length shooting targets which are about 90 cm away from each other and the shooter stands 9 meters away from the targets.
• Two 6-round magazines are loaded, and the shooter stands in the surrender position with the pistol concealed and locked and loaded.
• At the timer’s beep, the shooter turns and faces the targets, and draws his or her pistol and engages each target with two rounds to the vital zone. The shooter then executes a reload and engages all targets with two more rounds to the vital area.
• The shooter is supposed to complete the drill in under 10 seconds. Any shots outside of the vital zone count as a failure.
Advantages of El Presidente Drill
El Presidente improves target transitions, accuracy, situational awareness and speed and has many advantages, such as:
1. Better Reaction and Movement Ability: Since the shooter stands his or her back to the targets in the surrender position and starts to shoot with a beep sound, the shooter can demonstrate his or her ability to respond against unexpected threats quickly. Moreover, El Presidente Drill is of great importance in terms of shooting success since it is required for the shooter to draw the pistol from the holster safely and properly.
2. Better Engagement Skill: El Presidente Drill trains shooters to aim quickly at multiple targets and improve their accuracy at each target. This emphasizes the importance of consistently keeping the sights on target before each shot.
3. Quick Target Transition: El Presidente Drill makes the shooter stay ahead of his or her competitors in both tactical and sport shooting fields, due to improved engagement skills against multiple targets. Moreover, it also makes the shooter perform quick responses to threats in real life because of its scenarios based on aiming at multiple targets and quick target transitions.
4. Time Management: As there is limited time for target transitions, aiming, shooting, and reloading, El Presidente Drill is an invaluable learning tool for shooters to balance speed and accuracy.
5. Better Concentration and Stress Management: In this drill, shooters are required to perform multiple tasks, such as drawing the pistol from the holster, engaging the target quickly, shooting accurately, transitioning between targets and reloading in less than 10 seconds, and should minimize their stress while maximizing their concentration to be successful. The drill allows shooters to improve their ability to perform under pressure, thanks to performance monitoring data such as firing time and target analysis.
No matter how El Presidente Drills allows the shooter to improve their shooting skills, this fact cannot be overlooked: Once the shooter reaches at a certain level within the safety consciousness training environment, it is crucial to perform this practice under the supervision of the experienced instructors in terms of personal security and environmental safety.
