CANiK VENOM LR  medium calibre auto cannon with UNIROBOTICS TRAKON RCWS are already used by the British Army in the exercices!

The Wessex Storm 23 exercise, which was held in the United Kingdom at the end of May 2023, proved how this weapon system, which was officially launched at the IDEF 23 fair in July and seen integrated onto several 4x4 tactical vehicles by different manufacturers within quite innovative concepts, will play an important role in the land wars of the future.

In the exercise, the 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment (2 YORKS) has tested the Urban Phalanx concept, which is designed to be seamlessly integrated with different unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to gain situational awareness (ISR) and provide fire support. In fact, 2 YORKS has been tasked for some time with testing new concepts and technologies of the British Army developed by the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory of the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense (DSTL) in order to create the most suitable mechanized infantry force to conduct military operations in urban terrain.

Amongst the Robotic Platoon Vehicles-Armed (4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 UGVs equipped mostly with 12.7 mm HMG and a kind of ATGM) that were used by the 2 YORKS, the 6x6 Hippo HAWC UGV equipped with TRAKON RCWS drawed attention. Within the framework of the Urban Phalanx concept, this system was tested as a vehicle that will provide the most effective direct fire support in a residential area, minimizing incidental damage, and can easily accompany 2 YORKS soldiers in urbanized terrain.

Indeed, as experienced in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria in the last 20 years, and in Ukraine for the last 1.5 years, both low and high intensity armed conflicts are inevitably carried out in rural as well as in densely populated urban areas. As seen in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, however, the destruction brought about by the use of the current weaponry and established tactics is unbearable and counterproductive. Therefore, today we are witnessing the process of reconsideration of the rules, means, and methods, both in law of armed conflicts and military doctrine, regarding the use of fire support elements in urban terrain, with a view to causing the least collateral damage and destruction possible without compromising mission success. In this context, it is clear that the development and commissioning of new weapon systems that will provide precise and effective direct fire support to the infantry at the company/platoon level, especially in battles in built-up areas, and the appropriate methods and tactics of their use will be among the most important issues of the coming days. In this respect, it will not be surprising to see more VENOM LR and TRAKON RCWS integrated UGCVs entering the inventory of the armed forces of different countries for testing, evaluation, and eventually, for use. Just like the British have begun to do in the Wessex Storm 23 exercise…
