CANiK's latest addition to its arsenal of heavy machine guns, CANiK M3, is stepping onto the world stage, with the MSPO 23 fair held in Poland and the DSEI 23 fair held in the United Kingdom. CANiK M3 made its debut at IDEF 2023, held between 25 and 28 July in Istanbul, following 1.5 years of development and a 4-month qualification process. The machine gun received intense positive attention at the fair, with its increased rate of fire and the high firepower it offers to air platforms, and now is preparing to extend this capability to land and naval platforms.

Samsun Yurt Savunma’s (SYS) flagship brand, CANiK, completed the qualification process of M3, the newest member of the company’s heavy machine gun family. Following CANiK M2 QCB and its improved version, CANiK M2F, CANiK M3 made its debut at IDEF 2023 and created a significant buzz in the global market. The machine gun enjoyed significant attention at the fair and then made its international debut at DSEI 2023 in the United Kingdom. CANiK has made Türkiye one of only two countries in the world capable of producing heavy machine guns at this level with the introduction of M3, following a 1.5-year development and 4-month qualification process.
CANiK M3 can reach a rate of fire of 1,100–1,200 rounds per minute and will offer the same high firepower previously offered to only aerial platforms to land and naval platforms as well. Cahit Utku Aral, General Manager of SYS, stated that the integration of CANiK M3 into land and naval platforms would provide users with significant suppressive firepower.

CANiK M3 Can Be Used in All Platforms
In 2018, CANiK began development work on the 12.7 mm heavy machine gun and saw great success with the M2 QCB, which has a rate of fire of 600–650 rounds per minute. Following the M2 QCB, which became a game-changing firearm for the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), CANiK introduced M2F, an improved version with a higher rate of fire of 900–950 rounds per minute. The success of the M2F fueled CANiK’s efforts to move to the next level and complete its product family. After nearly 2 years of development and qualification processes, M3 was made a reality as the most advanced member of the family. M3 can achieve a rate of fire of 1,100–1,200 rounds per minute and has become an effective armament for not only air platforms but also for land and naval platforms.
Aral explained the necessity of developing the M3 as follows: “In the past, the fast-firing version that is the M3 was only used in aircraft. As air platforms have much higher speeds compared to others, a machine gun to be used on such platforms must also have a high rate of fire for air-to-ground or air-to-air engagements. This is because the high maneuverability and speed of aircraft require the saturation of the target area with more projectiles, which can only be achieved with a high-rate-of-fire weapon like the M3. However, in the last 10 years, we have seen that this high-rate-of-fire machine gun has also begun to be used on land and naval platforms. The U.S. Special Forces have started using this gun on land vehicles by adapting it to its requirements through the American manufacturers, due to its high firepower and effective long-range capabilities. This development triggered us to develop the M3.”

An Entirely Different Firearm Than M2 QCB and M2F
The feedback received from Turkish users on the M2 QCB and M2F, both produced by CANiK, demonstrated how these machine guns were game-changers in the field. After the first member of the family, M2 QCB entered Turkish service, CANiK donated its M2F heavy machine gun to users to test the performance of the firearm in the field and make it a combat-proven firearm. Since there was no project initiated for the procurement of M2F, this firearm with its enhanced rate of fire was used in the field this way. M2F received positive feedback and high satisfaction from various users, making this version a driving force in the development process of the M3.
Aral emphasized that the M3 is completely different from the M2 QCB and M2F, summarizing the development process of this gun as follows: “The transition from M2 QCB to M2F was relatively easy since 70 percent of the parts were interchangeable between the two versions, and we were able to complete it very quickly. However, the M3 is a completely different gun for sure. The effort we put into the M3, both in terms of R&D, quality, and industrialization, was much greater than for the other members of the family. While we could produce the M2F on the production lines where we produced the M2 QCB, we had to work specifically for M3, and its development process took nearly 1.5 years. We invested $2.5 million for the development and $2 million for the industrialization of this firearm, making us ready to deliver it to users in 2024.”

First CANiK M3 To Be Delivered in 2024
Aral shared that they received feedback indicating that the M3 that debuted in IDEF 2023 in Istanbul would be filling a significant gap on the battlefield according to the end-users. He also emphasized that they have received pre-orders for many projects. Aral mentioned that the M3 would be used in numerous weapon integration projects in friendly and allied countries and would help integrators solve their problems. He stated, “Especially in Southeast Asia and South America, there are ready-to-go projects that have been waiting for us to develop the M3 for a long time. Starting in 2024, we will begin deliveries as part of these projects. This situation will not only benefit CANiK but also open up new opportunities for our other companies under the SYS umbrella.”

Group Companies Greenlit Further Developments
Aral also noted that other SYS subsidiaries are actively preparing for the integration of the M3 heavy machine gun into all possible platforms. He concluded by saying, “All of our group companies, especially UNIDEF, are heavily involved in the integration of this machine gun into air platforms. We are developing gun pods, weapon turrets, and solenoid triggers for upcoming projects in our group companies. Other solenoid manufacturers in the international market cannot meet our quality and performance requirements, and as such, I believe we will quickly outperform our competitors in this regard. This development effort is also crucial for the integration of our machine gun into our customers’ aircraft in the Far East and South America. Since its establishment in 2013, UNIDEF has integrated weapons into almost all rotary-wing aircraft serving in Türkiye with the mounts it has developed. As such, we believe in ourselves and our expert team, and we believe our efforts will bear fruit in 2024. The development of ‘fixed mounts’ that require armaments to be integrated will be critical in this regard.”
