Without any doubt, one of the most memorable scenes of sci-fi classic Aliens directed by master James Cameron is where the remnants of a squad of U.S. Colonial Marines stranded after a search & rescue mission that went sideways, deploy 2 pairs of UA-571C Remote Sentry Weapons Systems in carefully selected positions to establish a perimeter defense. Once activated, these sentry guns successfully repel an attack by a horde of xenomorphs which, because of their sheer numbers and aggressiveness, would easily overwhelm the marines in close quarter combat. They hold the perimeter to the last bullet and give the marines a chance to fight another day.
These remotely controlled/autonomous sentry guns of science fiction have become science-fact today.1 Indeed, Unidef now offers a remote-controlled sentry gun system in the form of armed and armored trailer, housing an electrical retractable turret.
The designed system is equipped with a M134 rotary barrel 7,62mm machine gun with a very high rate of fire. The operator uses the sensor suite comprised of a Meteksan Defence millimeter wave perimeter surveillance radar and a thermal camera w/ laser rangefinder to detect, identify and engage the target with high accuracy. The sensor suite and the weapon are stored within the armored trailer - which can be towed by tactical wheeled vehicles - in order to keep a low profile and protect them as much as possible from the elements. Once the tailer is positioned, the search radar is erected. Should it detect a suspicious contact, weapon system is raised in 6 seconds to identify and engage it, if necessary. Weapon station has a rate of turn of 60 deg/s, with a maximum elevation of 45 deg., and a maximum depression of 25 deg.
The whole system is remotely controlled via MIL-STD-810G compliant wired remote command panel which allows the operator to be positioned in a safe location up to 100 m away from the trailer. In any case, the operator can get inside the trailer and manually control the gun.
Beside the weapon and the sensor suite, the armored trailer contains a sizeable amount of ammo, and it is self-sufficient thanks to its smart power source. Its sensor and weapon suite can be configured according to the demands of specific missions and conditions.
The highly deployable system, which is being readied to come into service with the Turkish Armed Forces, will especially play an important role in the border protection as well as in the perimeter security of FOBs and outposts established by any expeditionary force. It will pull guard duty safely, effectively and efficiently under the most adverse conditions, against any kind of threat - even against aliens from outer space!
