“We pioneer innovations with our R&D team of 70 people”
In parallel with the product and know-how it has developed, the R&D department, one of the strongest muscles of SYS, draws attention with the projects it has designed and developed. SYS plans to double its 15 million USD investment in R&D in 2021 by 2022.
If we were to ask what is the heart of the defense industry, the answer that everyone could give would undoubtedly be R&D... SYS’s Technical Manager Selçuk Temelli reminded that they offer the know-how they have created with their R&D studies and their budgets for R&D, not only to Turkey but also to the world, states that they have adopted the principle of leading their sector in this field as well. Temelli, by giving the good news that new products will be on the market in 2022, answers our questions as follows:
What are the points that make SYS different from its competitors within the scope of R&D in the defense industry?
Selçuk Temelli: In today’s world where competition is increasing day by day, SYS, attaches great importance to R&D. I can say that the R&D center of SYS has a large team structure that is well-equipped with advanced technology, produces and develops technology, and has a clear vision.
How much of your annual turnover do you allocate to R&D?
Selçuk Temelli: As SYS, we believe that an experienced and visionary R&D is very important for the future. For this reason, we have adopted the principle of pioneering innovations in the sector by keeping R&D investments at the highest level and increasing this resource every year. As SYS, we allocated a budget of 15 million USD for our R&D center in 2021. We doubled this amount in 2022 and we plan to increase it to approximately 30 million USD.
How many people work in your R&D department in total? Could you give brief information about the munitions you have realized in your R&D unit?
Selçuk Temelli: SYS, with its subsidiaries Unidef and Unirobotics, has an R&D power of more than 70 people. In this team, there are mechanical engineers,
material engineers, electrical and electronic engineers, chemical engineers and technicians with high experience in their own fields. Our R&D center is equipped with high level equipment in terms of engineering and technology. Engineering programs such as Catia, Unigraphics nx, Solidworks and Ansys are used in the design. In addition, we have modern machinery and equipment such as 3D printer, optical scanning, CNC 5-axis, wire erosion, which are used for prototype productions that will transfer R&D designs to production in the fastest way.

How many new product studies in total are currently in your R&D department?
Currently, 14 new projects are being carried out in our R&D center. The implementation of R&D studies in the defense industry is a very long process. Therefore, it will take time to complete these projects and start mass production. However, let’s give the good news that 3-4 of them will be realized in 2022 and that we can see these products in the market.
