CANiK Became a Multinational Defense and Aerospace Company Producing in 3 Continents with its Acquisition of UK-Based AEI Systems
The efforts CANiK commenced to acquire UK-based AEI Systems in 2021 culminated in the acquisition being completed in December 2022 with the green light from the United Kingdom authorities. The acquisition combines the 60-year experience and know-how on medium-caliber weapons from AEI Systems with the large production capacity utilizing cutting-edge technologies from CANiK. To commemorate this occasion which is critical for the defense sectors of both countries, the British Consulate General in Istanbul held a special reception on 26 April.
CANiK Enjoys Greater Prominence inTakes the Battlefield by Storm
CANiK is aiming to produce its medium-caliber cannons in both Turkiye and United Kingdom, as a result of the synergy created by uniting both parties’ expertise. The medium-caliber cannons to be produced are planned to be integrated into remote-controlled weapon systems (RCWS) first and used in ground, naval, and air platforms of both countries and thereby offering these systems to friendly and allied countries service.
Medium-caliber cannons can utilize various munition types, especially high-explosive, and they can be effective against a variety of targets in today’s battlefields. In addition, they have advantages like low recoil and light weight, and as such, they can also bring heavy firepower to small ground, land, and air platforms which makes medium-caliber weapons an excellent choice when there is a need to provide cost-effective intense firepower using a lightweight vehicle in the frontlines.
The ceremony hosted by officials from both countries, as well as stakeholders from the Turkish defense and aerospace sector, with Kenan Poleo, British Consul General of Istanbul and His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Eastern Europe and Central Asia Region, making the opening speech. Poleo stated the following on his speech: “I congratulate Samsun Yurt Savunma (SYS) and CANiK for their investment in the British AEI Systems. I am sure this partnership will bring many new opportunities to CANiK and AEI Systems, in both existing and new markets, and I am sure that both companies will have long-term continuous success and friendship. I know for the fact that both the United Kingdom and Türkiye are open to doing more together, supporting each other, and taking opportunities that will provide advantages to both countries.”
Yearly Revenue Over $100 Million from Medium-Caliber Cannons Alone
C. Utku Aral, General Manager of CANiK, made a speech at the reception and said: “With the completion of the acquisition process, AEI Systems joined the ranks of our subsidiaries. AEI Systems will continue to be a brand of medium-caliber weapons. Development, production, and integration will continue to be performed in AEI Systems’ British facilities increasing day by day. The production activities will be performed at AEI Systems within British ecosystem, especially to ensure the ‘Made in UK’ statement can be used. After 5 years, we are aiming to increase the yearly revenue by over $100 from the sales of medium-caliber cannons. AEI Systems’ operations will be supported by our subsidiary UNIROBOTICS as well. UNIROBOTICS offers high-tech, innovative, and competitive weapon turret solutions that medium-caliber weapons especially need. The first fruit of our labor in this regard is the TRAKON 30 turret from UNIROBOTICS, armed with 30x113 mm cannon. The cannon in question can be integrated into all platforms, including 4x4 land vehicles and small boats, thanks to its low recoil and ability to fire various types of munitions, using either remote-controlled or operator-controlled mounts. Even though 30x113 mm cannons have been getting more popular for ground and naval platforms in recent years, this type of weapon has been a mainstay for fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft for a very long time, acting as their main armament. In all platforms, the 30x113 mm cannons act as a significant power multiplier, thanks to their capability to fire high-explosive munitions.”
30x113 mm Cannon Expands Its Variety of UsUsage CasesUsee
Aral shared the 30x113 mm cannons’ variety of useuseage cases, as well as the projects these cannons are taking part in, commenting as follows: “A TRAKON 30 turret was integrated into Nurol Makina’s EJDER YALÇIN vehicle in 4x4 tactical vehicle class. In unmanned ground vehicles, a TRAKON 30 is being integrated into HAVELSAN’s KAPGAN. In addition, these weapons can be integrated into all 6x6 and 8x8 tactical wheeled armored vehicles. Furthermore, the fact that 30x113 mm cannons are being chosen instead of 12.7 mm machine guns for the close protection of new generation main battle tanks, like ABRAMS-X from USA and E-MBT from Europe, proves the importance of the capabilities the cannon bringing to its platform. As for aircraft, 30x113 mm cannons are already being used in Airbus’ Tiger and Boeing’s Apache, and all DASSAULT-made 4th generation or 4.5 generation fighter aircraft. Negotiations have already started for integration to Turkish Aerospace’s heavyweight assault helicopter ATAK 2 and Bayraktar’s KIZILELMA unmanned air vehicle. Like with air platforms, concept designs are already being worked on for the integration of 30x113 mm armaments to unmanned and manned surface platforms.”
CANiK and AEI Systems will Bring Thethe BreatheBreath of Fresh Air to the Exports
Aral highlighted that they would be catching the wind together with AEI Systems regarding exports and added: “We believe 30x113 mm cannon is a critical product for both Turkiye and United Kingdom. After the integration processes of the cannon and UNIROBOTICS’ TRAKON 30 turret conclude successfully, we will commence collaborations with all large-size platform producers we are currently working within this area as well. With the acquisition of AEI Systems, we have completed all our planned investments for the next 5 years. From now on, we will be investing to develop new product solutions and produce them, rather than acquiring companies.”
