CANiK M2 F’s designation comes from the adjective “fast”.
This model, which is the second member of the CANiK M2 HMG family, aims at keeping this venerable gun efficient by adapting its rate of fire to the requirements of the modern battlefield where mobility and speed of mechanized and air mobile units have increased in the last 50 years. In fact, the companies manufacturing M2s had begun developing a fast-firing variant of it in the 1960s. Henceforth, models like AN-M2, M213, XM296 have been mainly produced in the U.S., to be mounted essentially on helicopters.
In these models, an increase of 60% in the rate of fire has been considered enough to produce necessary volume of fire from and against fast moving and maneuverable helicopters and armored personnel carriers. Today, by completing the tests of and beginning to produce the M2F, CANiK is offering the most advanced and reliable version of these models.
In CANiK M2F, R&D engineers have taken advantage of the recoil operated mechanism of the M2, which basically allows that by very carefully reducing the weight of the heavy barrel by half, lightening the overall weapon by 1/4 and making subtle changes in some critical parts, the cycle rate of fire can be attained up to 800-900 rpm (rounds per minute).
Today CANiK M2F, with its reduced weight and increased rate of fire is the ideal HMG to be used on remote controlled weapon stations (RCWS) and in gun pods for light attack aircrafts and helicopters.
