TCG Pirireis (S-330), the first submarine in the New Type Submarine Project (YTDP), launched. TCG Pirireis, built at the Gölcük Shipyard, will enter the inventory in 2022 after the completion of testing and kitting out activities. Submarines with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) are suited to long-term underwater operations, and can operate covertly for long periods of time. The submarines are equipped with firearms to counter underwater, surface and land targets, including many types of torpedoes and missiles, and have the ability to lay mines.

Domestic defence companies have contributed greatly to the construction of the submarine, which was designed by the German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). ASELSAN, HAVELSAN, MilSOFT, STM Defence Technologies, Koç Information and Defence Technologies Inc., TÜBİTAK and AYESAŞ have all developed national systems for integration with the submarines.
